Chianti Classico ‘Gran Selezione’ DOCG
Started in 2014, the newest DOCG classification of Chianti Classico known as Gran Selezione was created. These wines are considered a step above the Riserva classification of Chianti Classico wines. Carpineto’s Gran Selezione is deep ruby in color, and exudes pronounced aromas of wild berries, interlaced with hints of vanilla and spicy notes. The palate is intense with great structure, texture and harmony, leading to a long and lingering finish. Pairs perfectly with roasted, braised or grilled meats, like a traditional fiorentina T-bone steak.

A mineral whiff to the vibrant red berries and plums with a hint of hazelnut and savory tobacco. Some black tea, too. Fine tannins nicely wrap the fruit on the fluid, full-bodied palate. Long and expressive finish.

The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is quite powerful in the glass. Dark red fruit, chalk, mint, tobacco and white pepper infuse the 2020 with quite a bit of complexity.

A muscular Chianti Classico highlighted by a mix of cherry, plum, loam and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Gains support from a broad tract of dusty tannins as this extends on the finish.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a powerful, super-concentrated wine. Super-ripe black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and espresso are all kicked up a few notches. This is an especially dense, extracted style. I find the 2016 a bit over the top for Chianti Classico.

The Carpineto 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione shows deep richness with lots of soft texture, ripeness and concentration. Dried blackberry and plum build in intensity and the wine moves slowly and heavily over the palate. That concentration is a bit much, and for that reason I suggest a hearty steak au poivre with this bottle.

Aromas of game, blue flowers, leather and damp underbrush lead the nose. The extracted palate offers prune, licorice and roasted coffee bean alongside a hint of rusty nail. Grainy tannins leave an assertive, astringent close.

Compelling aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry, licorice, iron, wild rosemary, juniper and tobacco are the hallmarks of this complex red. Harmonious and vibrant, it lingers with an aftertaste of fruit, savory and spice elements. Drink now through 2038.
