Estay Prieto Picudo
Estay’s label depicts typical flowers that grow amongst the primary crop of the region, grains. Bursting with fresh red berry aromas accented by floral and spicy oak notes on the nose. Bright fruit flavors perfectly compliment the crisp acidity and structured tannins. Well-balanced and round, Estay is a fresh, pure expression of the region’s native varietal. Produced from 90-year-old vines cultivated at 810 meters, this wine is aged 6 months in second-use French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels. Serve within a few years of the vintage with a wide variety of simple, everyday cuisine such as tomato-based pastas, grilled white meats, and roasted vegetables.

Vivid ruby. Spice-accented aromas of red berries and cherry, with a cracked pepper topnote. Sappy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors show good clarity and are given lift by tangy acidity. Spicy finish has vibrancy and cut.

Dominio Dostares’ 2008 Estay was sourced from the Finca del Llano vineyards where the old Prieto Picudo bush vines are 90+ years old. Malolactic fermentation occurred in seasoned oak where the wine remained for 6 months. It gives up a spicy perfume with fresh red berry aromas and floral notes. Forward, savory, and friendly on the palate, this nicely proportioned red is a great value meant for drinking over the next 4-5 years.

Smoky, dark, bold and full of black fruit aromas along with barrel notes and lemony accent. For Prieto Picudo, this is clean, decidely not funky and lush, with blackberry, spice and barrel resin. Finishes bacony and rich, but not fat or heavy; drink this year and next.

Lean and focused, this red delivers snappy flavors of cherry and cranberry, accented with leafy, smoky and minerally notes. The tannins are light but firm, the acidity crisp. Lively and fresh. Drink now through 2014.

Bright ruby. Sexy aromas of raspberry, cherry preserves, spicecake and incense. Lively, penetrating red fruit flavors are given spine by tangy acidity and gain flesh and sweetness with air. A very fresh wine with good finishing grip and a subtle lingering note of sweet mocha. I like the blend of richness and vivacity here.

Deep crimson-colored, it offers up notes of cedar, pencil lead, violets, and wild blueberry. On the palate the wine is fruit-forward buttressed by lively acidity. Liken it to Barbera from Piedmont. Drink this food friendly wine over the next 6-8 years. It is an excellent value.

Smoke and forest floor notes add depth to cherry and plum fruit in this pleasantly earthy red. This is hefty, with thick tannins, but remains balanced. Drink now through 2014.

Bright red. Minty redcurrant and cherry aromas are spiced up by cracked pepper and mineral nuances. Crisp, finely etched red berry flavors are light and moderately concentrated. Finishes brisk, energetic and persistent. Serve this with lighter fare, maybe with a slight chill.

Very nicely balanced. Early aromas of coffee, subtle curry and tobacco let you know you’re not dealing with something generic. And the forward black-fruit palate has grip, good tannins, chocolaty nuances and persistence. Estay is definitely worth a go if you’re seeking something different.
